The new SA Constitution will be put to a student referendum on Thursday December 3rd. The newly proposed constitution can be found here and can be compared to the current constitution.
Some Highlighted Changes:
-
The length of the constitution has been cut from 22 to 11 pages long.
-
In the SA elections, students will no longer vote for the president and EVP independently, the President and EVP will run on a combined ticket.
-
The role of the Executive Vice President will be redefined. The EVP will no longer serve as the chairperson of the SA Senate. Instead another member of the student body will be appointed as the Speaker of the Senate.
-
In addition to the current non-voting Freshman Senators, there will be a new “Freshman Assembly” to represent the freshman class.
-
The Student Court will be expanded from five sitting judges to seven.
The election will be held online and will be coordinated by the Joint Election’s Committee.
So looking at the new and old constitutions… it seems that almost all if not all of the page difference is in formatting changes and removing responsibilities from positions… so basically no real change!
