Student Association and Residence Hall Association Seek Feedback on Gender Neutral Housing

The Student Association and Residence Hall Association will be collecting student feedback on Gender Neutral Housing, April 9th from 10am-12pm. All information will be submitted to the Gender Neutral Housing Review Committee, a committee of faculty, staff, students, parents, and alumni representatives tasked with reviewing the possibility of implementing a gender neutral housing policy for the 2011-2012 academic year. Interested students can RSVP here for a five minute confidential appointment with student and faculty representatives from the committee. Your voice is important, be heard! Apply for CCAS-U Vacant Senate Seat

The Student Association Senate Rules Committee is pleased to announce the application process for filling the remaining Senate vacancies for the 2009-2010 academic year. Students in the Columbia College of Arts and Sciences – Undergraduate are encouraged to apply

Applications will be due on Monday, March 29, 2010 at 9:00 PM. The Rules Committee, if needed, will conduct interviews on Tuesday (March 30, 2010 at 4 PM in the SA office (MC 424). Candidates who pass out of the Rules Committee should be prepared to attend the next Senate Meeting, which will be on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at 9:00 PM.

Run-Off Elections to be Held March 10th-11th

The Joint Elections Committee will be holding a run-off election for the office of Executive Vice President this Wednesday and Thursday, March 10th and 11th. The two candidates are Logan Dobson (CCAS-U) and Rob Maxim (Senate Secretary 2008-2009). Check out www.gwelection.com for more information about the election. Student Association Advocacy Results in Improved Academic Advising

Last December SA President Julie Bindelglass and Executive Vice-President Jason Lifton penned an editorial to the student body in the Hatchet in which they reviewed the successes of the first semester, and promised to work towards even larger goals in the Spring. Today, they made good on that promise.

In line with their goal of improving campus life, the Student Association is proud to announce dramatic improvements to academic advising. After numerous discussions between SA leaders and University officials, including the Board of Trustees, the student body’s pleas for a better advising experience on campus have been heard, and administrators have made advising a priority.

“The number one concern we saw from students was the quality of their advising experience. We took that feedback seriously and conveyed to the administration the dissatisfaction we all felt,” said Julie Bindelglass President of the GW Student Association.

Most notable of the improvements announced today by the University is the doubling of the number of advisers for the Columbian College, the creation of an Academic Advising Advisory Committee and an accelerated timeline for the implementation of the degree audit system, something the Student Association Senate supported via resolution.

On the occasion of this exciting announcement, Student Association Executive Vice-President Jason Lifton said, “Academic advising is such an integral part of a college career, and it’s exciting to see the administration present a comprehensive plan to improve it. This is a great example of how continued student advocacy can make a difference in university policy.”

Student Association President Julie Bindelglass added, “These improvements are things we have been working on since taking office last year, and we are thrilled to see them come to fruition. Through collaboration with the student body we were able to effectively address an issue we were all facing on campus. At the end of the day, that is what the Student Association is all about.”

Come play in the snow while serving our local community!

Looking for something meaningful to do with your snowday? Lend a hand to dig out our neighbors! The GW Student Association is sponsoring a Foggy Bottom Dig Out today (February 11th) from 1pm-3pm. We will be shoveling the sidewalks and pathways of our Friends in Foggy Bottom. Due to the limited amount of shovels, please bring one if you have. We will also be asking our neighbors if we can borrow theirs. Interested students should email alison@gwstudentassociation.com or meet in Kogan Plaza at 1.

The Public Service Grant Commission encourages innovative, student-led service opportunities through financial and operational support to mobilize individuals and organizations in GW’s spirit of service. Applications will be reviewed by a four-person commission; preference will be given to innovative project ideas that encourage collaboration between other students, student organizations, or DC organizations.
